Falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults, and most happen at home. Many can be prevented with simple, inexpensive changes. Our team completes a walkthrough like this on every client's first visit.
Throughout the house
- Remove throw rugs, or secure them with non-slip backing.
- Clear cords, clutter, and low furniture from walkways.
- Add night lights between the bedroom and bathroom.
- Keep often-used items between waist and shoulder height.
Bathroom
- Install grab bars by the toilet and in the tub or shower. Towel bars are not grab bars.
- Use a non-slip mat inside and outside the tub.
- Consider a shower chair, handheld shower head, and raised toilet seat.
Bedroom
- Put a lamp or touch light within reach of the bed.
- Make sure the bed height lets feet rest flat on the floor when sitting.
- Keep a phone by the bed.
Stairs and entrances
- Use sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs.
- Light stairways well, with switches at the top and bottom.
- Repair loose steps and uneven walkways outside.
Health habits
- Ask the doctor or pharmacist to review medications that cause dizziness or drowsiness.
- Get yearly eye exams.
- Wear supportive, non-slip shoes indoors, not socks or loose slippers.
- Stay active. Strength and balance exercises reduce fall risk.
